How to set up your Google Places.

The steps below will assist you in setting up your Google Places should you decide to do it yourself.

  1. Go to Google and search for your business including the city and state.  If you show up with a Places logo, Google has already set a site up for you and all you need to do is claim and update it.  To do that click the business owner? and then edit my business listing.
  2. Enter your basic information such as phone numbers, email address, website and categories.  Depending on the type of business you have pick your categories carefully.  You can add up to 5 categories.  We recommend that you use the Google External Keyword tool to determine which terms people might search for get the most traffic.
  3. The description is also very important.  You are writing for people who are visiting your site and also for the Googlebots that index your site and then serve it up when people search the internet.  Make sure you include your keywords in the description.  You will end up adjusting this over the next few months as you review the results that Google is giving you.
  4. If you go out and see your customers, it seems better to list the cities that you serve instead of giving a radius mileage.
  5. Hours of operation and payments are pretty straight forward.
  6. Next is an option to include photos and videos.  We recommend that you upload both photos and videos.  Before uploading the photos name them your keywords.  Google cannot read a photo, but it will understand that you have included your keyword in another spot.  We can create two videos for you for $200.  If you are located outside of High Point, Greensboro, Winston-Salem we would need the photos and the raw video.  To see samples of work we have created, click on this link.
  7. Finally  there is a section to add other information.  You can put brands that you carry or services that you provide.  This can be a great spot, especially if you sell brand names.  Many people search on a brand name instead of the service you provide (Maytag instead of home appliances).  Most companies that are listing their Google Places have not figured this out so if you list your name brands, you will show up in a prominent place in the search results.

How to get reviews.

How to list your company on other sites

First why spend all this time on getting your company listed with the local directories below?  Because Google uses this information to decide where companies rank.  If you want yours to rank high then it is worth the time you will spend going to each directory and listing your company.  If you don't have the time we can set up your Google account at a very reasonable cost.

There are hundreds of other sites which you can list your company.  Other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, Best of Web and Yelp have local directories that you can register with.  In addition there are hundreds of local directories where you can register your company.

Major ones include:

  •     Yahoo Local
  •     Citysearch
  •     Acxiom
  •     InfoUSA
  •     TrueLocal

Most of the listings above have a free and paid listing.  You will need to evaluate the paid listings and whether they will benefit your company.  From Google's standpoint the paid and free listing carry the same weight.  In addition there are numerous local directories.  The easiest way to find them is to  go to the competitors who rank higher than you and at the bottom of their Places page there is a section entitled "More about this place".  Click all the links there and see if they have an option for you to list your business.
Putting it all together - Developing a strategy that works

This is the hardest part to write about because each company's situation is different.  The goal is to have your business show up at the top of the listing for as many categories or keywords as possible.  The way you do that varies depending on the type of business.

If you searched your listing and you were already showing up well, then congratulations!  The only thing you need to do it update your Google Places, adding wording, images and video that will encourage your prospective customer to call or come in.

If you have hundreds of competitors listing above you then you have a lot more work that you'll need to do.  Start by looking at the top sites.  Print out their Google Places listing and figure out what is different between their sites and yours.  Then get to work and change your site.  There are only a few factors that you need to look at that really make a difference:

  • Your Places Page - Make sure it is well written and has the right search terms.  Everything that we have discussed above.
  • Reviews - make sure customers are writing reviews on the review sites above.
  • Citations - Listings of your business on other search engines and directories.  Generally the more the better.
  • Location - Google puts a premium on location.  If you are closer than your competitor to the person searching and everything else is the same you should show up first.  If customers come to you and your competitor is located closer to the majority of the population you are going to have to develop an alternative strategy to make your business show up first, but it can be done.  We've helped clients show up in in front of businesses with better locations.

Good luck!  You will be more than rewarded for the time you put in to make your Google Places page show up.  When you get Places all set up the way you want it don't forget about Bing, Yahoo, Best of Web and Yelp.  They all have local directories that drive business, however each drives far less traffic than Google, which is why we have put so much attention to them.

If you want to get listed but don't have the time we can get you up and listed.  The cost varies from a one time fee of $395 to $695.  There is an optional monthly fee of $100 per month.

Services we provide:

  • Set up your Google Places account.  Update all information on the website.
  • Perform keyword research to determine the best words so your site shows up.
  • Optimize your site for keywords selected
  • List your business on other sites such as Bing, Yahoo, Best of Web and Yelp
  • List your business on local directories.  We do this so that your site will be seen as more relevant to Google and therefore return a higher ranking.
  • Upload and optimize photos.
  • Create videos that visitors can watch on your Places page.
  • Create or help you create coupons and other special offers.

After completing the work above your site will show up for the chosen search terms.  The exact placement will vary depending on competition and distance from from the person searching.  We sign each client up under their own Google Places account so you will be able to see the traffic and activity that Google is sending you.

Businesses that we have already researched cost $395.  New categories cost $495.  We create up to two videos for $150.  If you are local this price includes shooting the images.  If you are outside of the Triad of NC we will create the videos but will need the pictures and raw video.
